I was standing on the north side of the river Thames. The sky was dark and overcast, it almost seemed to be brooding, as if something was ready to burst forth. My mind was fixed on the Lord in prayer, I was meditating on the concept of the rediculous nature of grace, asking God to breathe into my mind with the revelation I was seeking. The was sun battling too. Battling to shine forth through the dark thick clouds that hung over London like a veil. I knew the Lord was communicating something to my spirit, I asked again,
' What are you saying to me Father ? Give me ears to hear O Lord ! '
Then very slowly, the sun began gently to break through the cloud cover, hitting the ever moving water of the Thames. It was a awe inspiring site, the water danced to a slow methodical rythm, randomly moving in and out of the sun light, dazzlingly ablaze, infused by the radiance of the sun. I beheld the sparkling water and with it, the glory of God. Then I was struck by a interesting thought:
Would there be anyway to plot mathematically where the next movement of the water would be that would then be lit up by the sun light? Was there any order admist the beauty of this chaos?
The logic of what the Lord was communicating became clear, just as that ray of sun light came streaming through the clouds, so to did the truth of grace chaos become alive to me. Could there be anyway to predict the chaotic pattern of God's grace ?
'And we know all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose' (Romans 8:28)
This statement made by the apostle Paul to the saints in Rome stands at the centre of grace chaos. The formula the Lord gave me for the concept reads thus :
" For every action there is an unequal and totally randomised completion, Christ ".
The notion of chaos is frightening, as far we temporal beings are concerned at any rate. There is a natural need and urgency inside man to conquer the unknown. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil was the answer to Eve's ignorance, it meant revelation of and therefore mastery of the unknown things, of her unknown destiny. Satan played upon the in built desire within Eve to know God, and perverted her thinking towards the idea that it was not God that she was searching for, rather the knowledge that God possessed. That old devil managed to convince Eve that she could be as God, and therefore negating her need for God. The notion that man could be God brings us to an interesting conclusion, because if man became God then he would truly be the master of his own destiny. There would be nothing unknown, there would be no chaos, only order through ones own omniscience. This is the condition from which the Father operates ! Did it ever occur to you that nothing ever occured to God ? He sees the end fron the beginning, He knew you before he laid the foundations on the World. . He knows which section of the Thames will be lit up by the sun three years, one day, 8 hours, fifty six minutes and thirty one seconds from now. That is who the Father is, the master of the universe's destiny and purpose. There is such order....... as far is God is concerned.
The crux of what Paul alludes to in the 28th verse of the 8th chapter of his epistle to the Romans is the importance of knowing who God is! Despite the chaos, despite the fallabilty of our temporal human senses, God is conforming us into the image of His son, working our salvation inwardly, placing in us hearts of flesh, onto which He has poured His Spirit, and as we begin to commune with the presence of the indwelling Spirit of Christ, we begin to experience the agape nature of God in a dimesion beyond human comprehension. It lifts us up into the heavenly realms, where we are seated with Christ. This perfect love cast's out all fear, taking us ever onwards into the deep oceans of His grace, where all things are possibile to He who believes. Grace, being chaotic in application is perfected in it's ultimate completion, which is Christ. As James cries out to the twelve tribes :
' My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have it's perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete lacking nothing '.
The Father's purpose for your life is that you will be the image of His son, those who truly embrace this truth and begin to walk the narrow path are those to whom the chaotic nature of grace has found some semblance of order. It takes a maturity of spirit which is only found in the death of self. The apostle Paul declares as if to himself:
' I have been crucified with Christ, it is no longer I who live , but Christ in me ' .
This is the Way, the Truth and the Life, to get to the destination we all must take a unendingly chaotic journey through the grace of God. Knowing the destination is the only thing which justifies the journey which takes us through the furnace of affliction, the chaos of grace is the flame inside that furnace, it dances where it will, with no predictation. Let us like Shadrack, Meshach and Abed-nego, dance inside the furnace, knowing that the testing of our faith produces patience, letting patience have it's perfect work, that we may be perfect and complete lacking nothing. Amen
