Just as long as Christians keep on trying to convince God that they're not as bad as they fear that they are and non-believers remain convicned that they are not as bad as we keep telling them they are then the Devil won't need to learn any new tricks because this one at least works just fine! It is an irony of perverse proportions that the devil has managed to convince unbeliever that they are
secure
concerning salvation while at the same time, persuading believers that their salvation is by no means secure and that whilst it may have been granted by grace it could be withdrawn due to dis-grace. The satanic argument runs something like the following
The devil to the unbeliever:
I appreciate that you might not act like a saint on the outside but deep down inside, you
re a good person. Admittedly, you
re not a churchgoer or anything like that but let
s face it, this God whom the Christians go on about is reckoned to be the God of Love. So, you might not be good enough to go to heaven but surely you
re not bad enough to go to hell. You
re a good person deep down and that must count for something.
The devil to the believer:
I appreciate that you might be trying to act like a saint on the outside but you and I both know that your mind is a sewer. Admittedly, you are a churchgoer but let
s face it, though this God of yours might be the God of Love, He
s not a idiot! Everybody knows that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. So, you might not be bad enough to go to hell but how can you be sure you
re good enough to go to heaven? I
d watch my step if I were you. How can you be sure that enough
s enough to get you into heaven?
It really is ingenious. The unsaved world lives with a false sense of security whilst the saved community lives with a false sense of insecurity. The latter then seeks to evangelise the former and wonders why its attempts are met with such derision. The plain truth is that the true church is a collective noun for those who have recognised the universal truth that God has done in Christ for Man what Man in his religion could not do for himself, viz. reconcile himself to God.
