I woke yesterday morning thinking about the wonderful Burt Bacharach song
The Look of Love
the song kept playing over and over in my mind. The more it played the more I thought to myself, this is a Jesus song. It is a song that expresses his heart for his creation. God seemed unbeknown to the genius that is Bert Bacharach to be speaking to his bride [the world]. So taken was I with the song that I used it as the basis of my talk at the Grace Project sister church [Memorial Church] here in Sao Paulo. Hayley and TaTa [one of the workers here in Brazil and a breadth-taking musician/song-writer himself. Watch out for his CD on the website available for download soon] gave an impromtu rendition of the song. It was fantastic. Spend a few moments meditating on the lyrics.
The look of love is in your eyes A look your smile can
t disguise The look of love It
s saying so much more Than words could ever say And what my heart has heard Well it takes my breath away. I can hardly wait to hold you, Feel my arms around you. How long I have waited, Waited just to love you Now that I have found you [You've got] The look of love It's on your face A look that time can't erase Be mine tonight Let this be just the start Of so many nights like this Let's take a lover's vow And then seal it with a kiss. I can hardly wait to hold you Feel my arms around you, How long I have waited, Waited just to love you, Now that I have found you, Don't ever go, don't ever go, I love you so.
Reflection I appreciate that there may be some who are a little nervous about
redeeming
the lyrics of so called secular songs, especially when they are
sensual.
I do not personally believe in such a divide. And if your squeamish about love than you find these lyrics a bit edgy then you should give a wide berth to the positively erotic Song of Solomon. What grabbed me about this song was that I have seen the look of love that
s in his eyes. It is that very look that changed my life. It is that look that time can
t erase. It is the look that took my breadth away. It was the look that Peter saw when the cock crowed; it was the look that the woman who had been caught in adultery saw when all her accusers had withdrawn
it is the look of love to all of us and which says
neither do I condemn you.
Its is the look that says I love you. It was the look that the centurion saw as Jesus hung on the cross that caused him to say
Surely this is the Son of God.
s the look that says
I can hardly wait to put my arms around you.
It
s the look that says
How long I waited to love you, now that I have found you don
t ever go.
But here
s the really intoxicating part
anybody who has seen the look has the look. Imagine that!
